Sometimes service professionals find that their photos on their Thumbtack profile have large black borders, or are cropped strangely. Here is some information to help you out with these issues and to help you make your photos look great on your profile.
There are three kinds of photos related to your Thumbtack profile: 1. your profile photo (which appears near your name in the upper right of your profile), and 2. your service pictures (which appear prominently in the center of your profile, in slide show format).
1. Profile photos
For profile photos, our system makes them square, and they will appear at 50x50 pixels or 100x100 pixels. If your photo is getting cropped strangely, it's because we are automatically cropping it to make it square. If you don't like how your profile photo appears - unfortunately you will need to find a way to crop it square in a way that you think is acceptable. You can probably do this pretty easily with a basic photo editor on your computer (like Windows Paint). We just don't have the capability at the moment to do it another way.
2. Service pictures
Service pictures on our site are 580x380 pixels.
If the picture is landscape orientation, first we scale down the picture to the proper resolution, then we crop off edges of the picture.
If the picture is portrait orientation, first we scale the height to 380 pixels, then we show black borders on the right and left edges of the picture.
Finally, please note that at no point will we pixelate images and stretch them out to a size that is too big for them. If a picture is smaller than the size we are looking for, we just fill in the borders with black and keep the picture looking good.
Our engineers and designers have found that these are the best rules for the majority of our users. Sorry if these rules don't work perfectly for your situation. Hopefully we have provided enough information to help you make your pictures look as good as possible for display on your profile to your customers.
Thanks!

Looks like we all have the same problem of adding pictures. I have pictures on my desktop I want to add but can't add them.
Hi everyone - sorry for the late response.
To add a picture to your profile, please log in to your account and go here: http://www.thumbtack.com/profile/dashboard
Then click on "Manage pictures" (under "Manage your listing" on the right side of the page).
You can "Add Pictures" from that page.
Hope this helps!
I wanted to add our company logo which is horizontal. It is unfortunate that you only accept squares. We aren't a square
Always helpful to have those dimensions! Good post. I resized my photos and checked them locally--they're still a touch fuzzy, I know it's super important for Thumbtack to load fast, but I think you guys might be slightly over-optimizing the photos hence the slight fuzziness. I suggest a little less optimization. Love Thumbtack though!
You're beautiful Heather.
Hi heather, thanks for this post. We uploaded our images at the appropriate size and the resolution appears to have been changed or the files compressed. For a service provider that provides an image based service like we do it's critical that our images display as uploaded. Is there anyway to fix the image compression so that the images are displaying as uploaded ?
I will place my picture when i get some one come in to help me.I just learn to use my compute
Nice picture Heather M.
Hi Cindy,
I'm not exactly sure what's going on here.
Do you mind emailing us (support@thumbtack.com) with the photo attached? We'll be happy to work with you to upload it for you or try to figure out the problem.
Do you know which browser you're using by any chance (Internet Explore v6.0, Firefox, etc.)?
Thanks Cindy!

For some unknown reason, all my photos when in the file are horizontal and even if I rotate 'em when I enlarge them there in the file (I hope I am clear), they don't translate that way when I upload them. It is frustrating as hell and I dunno what to do . Kate

Hi!
I've tried several times to upload photos from my desktop and the loader just keeps processing, but nothing happens. From the look of the other emails above this has been an ongoing issue.
Please provide me with some guidance.
Thanks!

Hi Shovana,
Any info you can give us on the your browser (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox v. 5, Chrome, etc.) would be helpful. Also, any info on the type of photo you're trying to upload would be helpful (.jpg, .gif, etc).
Thanks Shovana!
